 The Animals

A visit to the LINC Resource Center Open Lab will open many doors for enthusiastic computer users. The latest treasure you will find there is a series of software developed by Mindscape for children of all ages. A review of The Animals, one piece of the software that focuses on science, research and environmental studies, reveals that using The Animals is as much fun as a trip to the San Diego zoo. Just like a real zoo, this program is full of animal and plant exhibits. Each exhibit includes photos, movies, stories and text.

The program is educational but entertaining. Users of the software all agree that the content of the program is clearly presented and is very creative. Much of the information is narrated and read to the user, allowing persons with low vision or who are pre-literate to use the software independently. The material is presented in a way that appeals to a wide range of learning styles, ages and abilities. Students can read text, see pictures and videos and read stories. There are no timed activities so children won't feel pressured to go too quickly and rush through areas. Throughout all of the activities available there is the option of help. There are controls that allow the user to alter visual effects to your specifications. The program holds its value over a long period of time, as again it appeals to all ages, but also because it contains such a vast amount of information, that cannot be reviewed in just one or two sessions.
