Children who are unable to access many drawing, writing, and educational software used in daily activities, do not have to be left out of the action, because many of the activities can be customized using Intellipics, Overlay Maker, and the Intellikeys keyboard. Intellipics is both a multimedia educational program and an authoring tool that allows you to create your own learning activities on any topic you wish. You can access visuals by using the Intellipics picture library, your own clip art, digitized graphics or even personal photos. Free custom-made activities (for both the Mac and Windows platforms) can be downloaded from the Intellitools website at www.intellitools.com.
The Intellipics makes literacy activities that are physically accessible and developmentally appropriate to meet many different learning needs. Some examples LINC used in this year's Summer Arts camp included lessons on the Rain Forest and Africa, and exercises to improve counting skills and story telling. Children were able to print pictures to make books.
If you would be interested in attending a workshop on how to use Intellipics, contact Jean Wunder, Special Education Coordinator at LINC. She will be collecting names of interested teachers and parents and will schedule workshops that will teach users how to get the most from this very adaptable software.
