LINC Takes It On the Road with Home Care Services

The Dresher Foundation awarded LINC a two-year $20,000 grant to provide home services to children with disabilities living in Harford County, Eastern Baltimore County and Baltimore City. ìHouse Calls for Childrenî will bring specialized/adaptive computer technology to the homes of children with disabilities through needs assessments, loan of adaptive equipment and software, training, and troubleshooting. The project is open to children with physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities. Examples of services that are provided include teaching children who have autism how to use touchscreens to access special software, and children with learning disabilities how to use software that reinforces reading and writing skills.

LINC will also provide home services to adults with disabilities living in Maryland thanks to a $30,000 grant from The Maryland Home and Community Care Foundation. For the second year, the Foundation's grant allows LINC to serve adults who have physical disabilities such as quadriplegia, visual impairments, or physical and cognitive impairments. Adults with degenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrigís disease are also eligible for home services. Services include training to persons who are blind or have low-vision, technology set-ups to accommodate physical limitations, technical assistance and upgrading of existing technology, and evaluations and needs assessments.

Both programs allow LINCís technology staff to make house calls to help these children, adults and their families and caregivers learn to access a wide array of technological solutions, including computers and adaptive equipment, special software, and environmental control units customized to meet individual needs.

The services are available to children, adults and their families who are unable to travel to the LINC Resource Center because of the severity or nature of their disability, transportation barriers, or specific needs.
