e-books! Where Do I Begin?

e-books are great resources for persons who are blind or have visual impairments as well as for persons with learning disabilities. A good place to start to find out about the many electronic books available on line would be Richard Wanderman's website for persons with learning disabilities. Visit http://www.ldresources.com and you will find links to lots of other sites with thousands of titles that you can download for free and have your computer read to you. You will also find a large collection of essays and information on useful technology and software.

Another resource for on-line books would be the On-Line Books Page, a directory of books that can be read right on the Internet. It includes an index of thousands of books on the Internet, and pointers to significant directories and archives of on-line texts and special programs. Go to http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/.

Check out Project Gutenberg (http://www.promo.net/pg/ and http://www.gutenberg.net/). These sites include literature and references in downloadable formats.

Screenreading and talking word processing software that translates speech to text is needed to read the text.

Examples include JAWS, HelpRead, Text Edit Plus, TextHelp, Kurzweil's VOICE, OutSPOKEN, Write Outloud, Intellitalk, SimpleText (built-in text reader for Macs), and Microsoft's Active Accessibility (built-in text reader for Windows).
