Talking Typer for Windows

Self-voicing software for persons with visual impairments

Talking Typer for Windows, is a new typing and computer keyboard training program for the PC that aids a person who is blind or visually impaired. The software uses the computer's screen and sound card to instruct, drill, practice and play games with typing lessons and allows the user to edit the included lessons or create new lessons of his own.

The Talking Typer shows and speaks a series of letters or words and waits for students to type them. The user or the person leading the instruction can set the software to accommodate a variety of skill levels. For instance, the speed of the spoken words can be regulated, repeated once or more, and spelled out. Students mark their progress as the computer verbally announces their typing speed and accuracy. Features are easily adjustable to the student's level of sight impairment. The software is designed for either individual use or in a group training environment.

Instructors also benefit from its flexible design. The software has the ability to create and edit lesson content; set advancement criteria, and lesson complexity; and assign individual lessons. The flexibility of the software and its many skill levels allows people from age 6 and up to use it effectively. The CD-ROM can run on a PC running at least Windows 95, with only 16 megabytes of RAM, and is only $79. To try the program before purchasing you can download the demonstration version from thewebsite hosted by the American Printing House for the Blind at www.aph.org/tech.

LINC staff and volunteers who are blind or visually impaired tested the software and found it easy and effective to use. With their recommendations, LINC purchased the software so members can try it out during Open Lab hours. Students with visual impairments who participate in LINC's job training component will also use Talking Typer to advance their keyboarding skills.
