Greg Janis

The first time Greg Janis visited LINC, it was a breakthrough for him as well as his family. The length of time that Greg sat and used the computer was unprecedented for him. If you ask his mom, Debbie, she'll eagerly tell you that Greg was happily entertained for over 30 minutes. She adds that nothing held his interest for that long, up until then. It was then, that the family decided that anything that held his interest like that was worth pursuing further.

When Greg's family first came to LINC they were trying to find out if there might be anything available that would interest Greg in computers. They wanted to learn more about what software might hold Greg's interest and what might be available in the way of adaptive controls. LINC offered Greg and his family an opportunity to try out a variety of software and adaptive equipment. The Janis family discovered that computers offered opportunities for Greg to interact in a mainstream environment.

The first year Greg came to LINC, he attended the Summer computer clubs. Paired with children without disabilities, he learned how to use a number of software programs and games and met other children with similar interests.

When Greg was in 7th grade, Greg's occupational therapist and the rest of his school team, were amazed to find that Greg could use a mouse. No one at school had ever assessed him on the computer or believed he was capable of using one -- other than to hunt and peck for a few keys.

Greg's mother, Debbie says, "LINC has no preconceived ideas about what Greg can or can't do on the computer. LINC's philosophy is HE CAN DO!"

"LINC has been excellent for Greg -- the staff always seems to find just the right software to motivate him. During these teenage years, motivation to do anything other than be a couch potato (typical teenage behavior) is a top priority for us!! Greg is now at the age where he does not want direction from Mom or Dad, but generally responds quite well to other adults who have an interest in working with children with special needs. LINC provides the expertise and the interest to help Greg be successful -- AND to feel good about himself'," according to Debbie.

She adds, "When Greg is asked if he wants to go to LINC and he stops what he is doing, puts on shoes and socks, and sits in the car waiting for us to take him -- that tells us LINC provides an invaluable service to children. They teach AND nurture. Thanks for being there, LINC!" ® (Summer 1997)
