SmartModem (SM85)
The SM85 SmartModem is a device that allows a computer to communicate with a TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf). The SmartModem in effect translates the computer's ASCII code to the TDD's Baudot code, and vice versa). The SmartModem is solely suited to this type of translation; it is unable to be used as a standard Hayes compatible modem for connection to on-line services. The SmartModem can be used, however, with any terminal software for the Macintosh, and communicates at a maximum rate of 300 baud. This type of modem allows a Macintosh to communicate with deaf individuals using a TDD.
